History

The art spirit has been an integral part of this community for many years. In 1933, Gwen Frostic, Ed Bryant, Mariam Pulver, and others, organized The Acanthus Art Society of Wyandotte. The name Acanthus, as chosen by the founding artistis, is derived from the Greek Corinthian Order of Architecture. The gracefully curled Acanthus leaf was used as the primary motif. This leaf became known to the ancients as the "Sign of Achievement" and has ever since taken a prominent place in art tradition. Acanthus Art Society was an early recipient of the "Diamond Award" presented by the Wyandotte Chamber of Commerce for "Significant contributions to the progress of the community". Perhaps our greatest achievement to date is the founding of the Wyandotte Art Fair. The Fair has grown from a handful of artists to hundreds of exhibitors from across Michigan and beyond.
